This started off as a test post but now I'm really curious what people think about the question. Who is a leader you admire and what is it that makes them a good leader?

This might be corny but Mayor Whitaker is a leader I admire. He holds steadfastly to his beliefs, and his commitment to his community and Alaska is evident.

I would have to say that a leader that I would admire would be a humble leader, that is elected to position without having to campaign or buy the public through a public relations department. If one person, completely by himself, puts himself right in the middle of the spotlight and bares every single true fact about himself to the public, and thus gains their admiration, would also gain my admiration because this leader would be truly honest and would be trustworthy, to have trusted his entire being to the public. I don't care if he is great at foreign policy; I don't care if he is great at relating to people; I don't care if he was a soldier or a civil engineer, or even a homosexual. If they showed this utter trustworthiness and honesty, I would vote for them, because you cannot have a great character without telling the truth. Sure, it sounds corny, but without truthfulness you can't be honest, you can't love, you can't even show a modicum of compassion. And, this is the greatest crux, if you cannot trust someone, then you cannot put them in a position of trust or else they use and abuse their power and thus become the opposite of what they claim to be.

A good leader that I admirer is a teacher. A teacher because they work to make sure that students have knowledge that can help them in there decisions of what they choose to do for the rest of their lives.

A leader would be an elder. I think that they are a leader because they are wise and they teach us a lot about subsistence and language.

They may not be political leaders, but I really admire my parents. They teach me so much, and continually support me when things get rough. Another person I admire is a great leader in radio, the one, the only, (can I get a drumroll please?) MARK LEVIN!!! I like him because he says what's on his mind, and is never afraid to tell people what he thinks of them. Thank me very much.

I had the privilege to meet John Navarro, president of the Council for Tribal Employment Rights (CTER) for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Besides being inspirational in his knowledge of the movement of tribal relations and Native American rights, he is a phenominal leader because of his 1) open-minded, progressive approach to bringing government sects, private contractors, and Indian reservation officials together to support employment 2) his education and his integrity in creating CTER and 3) his ability to bi-pass the inequities in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (yes, it should be ammended and updated!) to benefit Native American/Alaska Native groups.
A leader is humble, I agree, but confident in his/her direction, while remaining loyal to his/her initial movitivation/ethics which has shaped and will continue to shape decisions to benefit others. A leader will always remember where he/she came from and recognize the challenges & successes in his/her individual and professional life.
A leader can manage time and people in today's society. C'mon, it is a mandatory skill of balancing priorities.
A leader is an elder, a teacher, a listener, and a do-er.

You know, a leader is a hard person to pick. What is absolutely needed is a person that makes decisions, but he must also be completely and utterly deferential to the people he represents. Also, he must prove his worth and mettle to another person, a group of people, a rural town, an urban city, a nation, a country, even the world when we get to that point. Truly, only the best would survive such a grueling trek. But will that trek make them bitter beyond all hope of recovery, and thus poison their time in office? They are a lot of questions, and hopefully we can find the answers.
