If you were President for a year...

I would totaly change America! There are so many problems that need to be fixed, and we have to start somewhere. Debt, the economy, gas prices and future fuels, wars, food prices, same sex marriages, abortion, the list goes on and on. What I think is that we need to take action by getting people who are involved and interested in these subjects and know what they are doing, and fight against these things that are wrong (the list above). Obviously, there has to be a common standard where everyone can at least somewhat agree, like that abortions are wrong (I heard on the radio that the gov. is starting to think about giving unborn babies the same human rights that we have upon conception), that marriage was made to be between one man and one woman, and other issues like that.

It is all well and good to think so gun-ho on the whole presidential office, but the truth is mobilizing people to work in fields they care about isn't that easy. Also controversial issues like the ones listed above are going to meet a strong opposition if bans and regulations are put into place. I am not saying that they are right, but it isn't as easy as simply saying your not going to do that anymore...
If i were to be president for a year i would gather together America's top economists and businessmen. Once together i would hold a large convention to help develop ideas for economic development. I would develop a website where people from around the U.S. could speak out on different ideas through posted forum's, so that they too will be involved in the development of a workable economic plan to help eliminate our national debt. I know it wouldn't be that easy, but that is where i would try to start.
I would also bring together experts on education and with them take a serious look at ways to reform the education system so as to better prepare our youth for the future. I believe that again online forums would be useful, by getting common people involved.
Honestly i am not one hundred percent certain how i would try and handle everything else and i know that the pressures of office would change half of everything i said anyways.

I would certainly do my best to align the country in a way that satisfies the American public. And, on average, the people in America want things to change. So, I would start by diverting all the money used for pork-barrel spending into more useful endeavors by vetoing any sort of bill that has any pork in it. The bills will have to explain exactly why each item of spending is important, and whether or not it can fit into the budget. I would listen to the advice of the Cabinet, but would take it with a grain of salt at the same time.
Also, I remember a comment from a section of a Readers Digest magazine: "That'll be the day when the government funds all of the schools and the army has to hold a bake sale to buy a tank." That would be exactly what I would shoot for.
Also, I would create a giant, online forum for people to submit their ideas and comments to me, personally. Every single American has a voice which needs to be heard. I want to make that voice heard by me, if I was president.
I would do more, depending upon the issues and the conventions of the time, but those are a couple of things that I would do.
What do you think?

Unfortunately if you were to veto all bills with pork-barrel spending no legislation would be passed and it is more then likely that congress would begin to just override your vetoes. As for the Army yes there is a gargantuan amount of money being poured into it and the education system needs more finance, but in no way does it call for a radical approach. We need our national defense. We don't necessarily need as much offense, but our standing military and budget for that military will have to remain high. Though if we could pour more money, to be used in a non-wasteful manner, within the education system it would increase the intellectual levels of students coming out of schools and thereby assist in the solution of various national issues.
On the forum i think that is a good idea, but i think you would have to hire somebody to sort and sum up the incoming posts so that you could get a general understanding of the public's opinion. Unfortunately we are all human and in no way possess the ability to read and respond to hundreds of posts a day, especially if they write half as much as we do here.Posted 1 year ago # -
I get your points. I guess the reality is that we cannot change an entire system in a day, and I understand that. But still, change is needed. Hopefully, Obama can at least start that process of change. And if not him, then who? And if nobody, are we screwed for as long as we exist? It's late here, and I'm going to bed right now.
Weigh in and say what you think.

Change is needed... i don't know if Obama is the person, but without change we don't grow. without growth we die. That is the simple fact of the matter, i am one hundred percent for change that was the whole purpose of the conference... but we need somebody great to lead the way and we need them soon.
