The initial steering committee members for the 2012 Conference of Young Alaskans has been selected. Committee members have spent the first six months of 2011 planning and beginning coordination for COYA12, and recently met for their second in-person meeting to draft the agenda and launch the application process, which begins on August 1.

The steering committee for the 2012 Conference of Young Alaskans is composed of young leaders from around the state who have been selected by the Institute of the North based on their community service, prior COYA participation and statewide perspective.


We are still accepting steering committee members – contact us soon to be included for consideration. Below are some reasons current steering committee serve.


· “I met amazing young leaders from across the state at the life-changing event, and I honestly believe my first COYA experience increased my dedication to Alaska, inspired me to help develop young leaders in our state, and enabled me to see that Alaskans who may be completely different truly can work together as a respectful state-wide community.”

· “I had certainly never envisioned that this would be an entirely delegate-driven process, or perhaps more profoundly a civil process. For me the Conference of Young Alaskans was my first opportunity to interact with peers who were equally, if not more concerned for the future, and my first opportunity to have serious discussion about big issues in Alaska.”

· “Participating in such a rich event allowed me to develop new understandings of what it means to be a young leader in Alaska.”
