Getting Started with the Discussion

Welcome to the discussion! If this is your first time using an online discussion area there are a few general rules of etiquette that you should familiarize yourself with before you begin.

  • Discussion Etiquette
    • Don’t Shout
    • Typing in capital letters is considered by many to be the equivalent of shouting, please keep in mind that we’re trying to elevate our discussion.

    • Don’t Spam
    • Spamming is annoying. We encourage you to share any legitimate events of interest to Young Alaskans but there’s no need to inundate the discussion area with irrelevant mountains of advertisements.

    • Stay on Topic
    • The discussion area is organized so that people can chime in on the topics they care about. Please try not to derail any productive conversation with too much side chatter. If you don’t find a topic you’re looking for, please feel free to create a new one or get in touch with one of the steering committee members with your suggestion.

    • Respect Others
    • People are generally pretty nice. Give others the benefit of the doubt and keep in mind that it’s hard to pick out tone and sarcasm in electronic text. Please go out of your way to be respectful and help us maintain a good environment for discussion.

Now that you’ve read through our laundry list of etiquette you might want to start out by making a few test posts. You can go to the “Introductions” discussion topic and tell us a little bit about yourself for starters. You might also try replying to a few posts made by other people.

So hopefully by now you’ve successfully replied to a post and made a post of your own. Next, you’ll want to learn how to keep up to date of your discussions.

If you have any more unanswered questions about how to use the discussion area please drop our webmonkey an email.
